SGI and RINA launch a partnership to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector

Releases

Rome, February 24, 2025 — Società Gasdotti Italia (SGI), Italy’s leading independent gas transmission operator, has entered into a strategic collaboration with RINA, a multinational group specializing in inspection, certification, and engineering consultancy. This partnership aims to establish a structured pathway for effectively reducing methane emissions in the energy sector and implementing the new regulations introduced by the European Union.

The European Regulation 2024/1787, published in July 2024, has introduced stringent new guidelines for the measurement, monitoring, reporting, and reduction of methane emissions across the entire energy supply chain. Among the key requirements, natural gas infrastructure operators must submit, by August 5, 2025, a report quantifying methane emissions at the source level for all emission sources, using at least generic emission factors. This will be followed by further in-depth analyses in the coming years.

Thanks to the partnership with RINA, SGI has developed an operational plan that includes:
• Updating the potential emission sources along its transmission network;
• Quantifying emissions at the source level using generic emission factors and preparing a detailed report;
• Developing a Methane Emissions Monitoring Plan to implement advanced quantification strategies and identify mitigation measures.

“This collaboration represents a crucial step in ensuring compliance with European regulations and, above all, in reaffirming our commitment to the energy transition and reducing the environmental impact of our activities,” said Raffaele Maiello, SGI’s Chief Operating Officer. “RINA’s expertise will enable us to effectively tackle the challenges of emissions monitoring and management.”

The partnership between SGI and RINA also looks ahead to the future, with plans for on-site monitoring campaigns to improve measurement accuracy and optimize emission containment strategies.

“In an increasingly sustainability-oriented regulatory framework, we enthusiastically support SGI in achieving even higher environmental standards,” added Chiara Valentini, Head of Environmental Engineering and Permitting at RINA. “Through a structured approach and the integration of cutting-edge monitoring and mitigation technologies, we are working together to strengthen regulatory compliance and promote more sustainable practices in the energy sector.”

With this initiative, SGI reaffirms its commitment to an increasingly sustainable management of Italy’s energy system, aligning with EU directives while looking ahead to the future of the energy transition.
